Step Outside with Me
If you will allow me to captain you on this journey through time and space, we will leave the cave of "Suppose Tos" and compulsory systems behind.
It's true, the experience of stepping out of the only way of life we have been presented with can be jarring. Many parents and even kids who started out in the school system may think "This is not real, it's too easy!" I assure you, the lives, characters and stories we are about to encounter are very real!
Some stories have been lived.
Some stories are currently unfolding.
Others, possibly your own, has yet to begin.
These are not shadows on a wall, but living stories of unschooling, worldschooling, self-directed learning, and lives unfolding beyond this threshold.
This journey begins somewhere else.
With a bit of radical separation from all we thought we knew.
It begins in witness.
It begins in the living record of people learning beyond a cookie-cutter system, in the discovery of days shaped by curiosity, autonomy, relationship, improvisation, play, technology, contradiction, longing, language, and change.
I am here to document. I am here to entertain. I am here to build cultural representation for lives not yet rendered with depth, beauty, humor, intelligence, and narrative weight.
I write from inside a universe that has been missing from the page, the screen, and the public imagination: the universe of unschoolers, worldschoolers, self-directed learners, and families living beyond the expected script.
Not as stereotype.
Not as ideology.
Not as a tidy success story.
But as a living world.
A world of discovery.
A world of drama.
A world of challenges and the space to process it.
A world of unfinished becoming.
My role in this world is to guide your imagination across the threshold beyond current limits. I am the captain, author, documentarian, narrator, observer, builder, and sometimes a character. I work in memoir, for your entertainment, to collect artifacts, with field notes, in story fragments, with cultural evidence, from genetic memory, through illustrations and voiceover.
If you are interested in what unschooling feels like. What it sounds like. What it asks of us. What it makes possible. What kinds of people it allows us to become. What forms of learning appear when life is no longer organized around compliance. What beauty emerges when childhood, culture, and selfhood are given room to breathe.
This journey exists because representation matters.
There is entertainment for nearly every kind of life except this one. There are stories for nearly every social script except the ones unfolding here. There are countless narratives that normalize the factory model of childhood, and almost none that immerse us in the strange, intelligent, hilarious, complex, liberating reality beyond it.
"Unschool Discoveries: Venturing into the Unknown" ↗ was my debut in that void. My first voyage.
I cannot explain the universe to you from inside the cave of what has been.
But if you are willing to join this ride I can bring you, the audience, to the other side.
Unschool Discoveries is the universe we are headed to explore. It is a lived world. The narrative world. The character world. The place where you the reader, viewer, or listener accepts that words are spells for manifestation and systems are constructs we can change.
The Unschool Pages is where the Unschool Discoveries universe is made transparent. It is the notebook holding the canon of its cosmos. The authorial margin. The archive of witness. The workshop where ideas breathe, scenes are captured, fragments are refined, and the cultural record is kept.
One is the world. The other is the record of becoming.
